The Legend
An ancient legend narrates that the blossoming of the almond, would be connected to the history of Acamas and Phyllis.
Phyllis young and beautiful princess of Thrace, daughter of Sitone, was in love of Acamas, son of Theseus and Phaedra.
During the war of Troy, Acamas left with Diomedes, between the retinue of the Achaeans.
Spent ten years the survivors came back from the war, the princess not seeing Acamas between them, thought that he would dead and desperate, she killed herself.
The Goddess Athena, moved from this tragedy transformed Phyllis in a tree: the Almond Tree.
But Acamas, was not dead…
When he came back knew of Phyllis’s death, reached the almond and embraced it crying, suddenly, almond’s branches covered themselves of flowers instead of leafs, as to return Acamas’s embrace.

- Saint Calogero
Saint Calogero represented by a statue with the black skin, arrived to Agrigento around XVsec. And lived all his life as hermit.
The name Calogero, means “fine old man”, adjective to call the hermits.
Man with big culture arrived in the town already with a fame of thaumaturge and the man that stoped the earthquake of the 1578, he dedicated all his life to the recovery of a big number of sicks
The knowledge of the black Saint is symbolized with the book that he keeps between the hands of the statue.
During the days of the celebration in his honor (the first 2 Sunday of the July), the tradition wants that who have received a grace from the Saint, dedicate to him a trip “inpiduni” ( = barefoot) or give as gift bread representing the received grace, bread that is tossed to the Saint from the balconies of the streets where the procession walks.
This way to give the bread remembers that the Saint took care of the lepers and when he asked the begging of alms, the people it was afraid to draw near so tossed from far distance their donations.
The celebration in honor of Calogero is one of most important of the East Sicily, the second Sunday, besides the procession of the Saint across the streets there is also a parade of typical sicilian carts: carts, pulled from selected and decorated horses, with inlay works representing paladins' deeds.

Phalaris has been one of most great tyrants of the ancient Akragas
Since 570 B.C. until his death, he devoted himself to make become Akragas, a great economic and military strength more important of its age, but also he has been one of most cruel tyrants of history.
About his cruelty the legend says that the tyrant commissioned, a giant empty bronze bull and inside the bull, inflamed by a big flame under the paunch, he closed his enemies that died burnt, gratifying himself of their cry, that went out from the mouth of the bronze animal, similar at a moo, subsequently their bones were made some bracelets.
So that nothing could disturb this his moment of joy he ordered that the smokes emited would have the scent of incense.
Phalaris, ordered to go inside the bull also bull’s sculptor Perillo as test of sounds effects, but before that Perillo died, Phalaris ordered him to come out from the bull and threw him from the cliff.
Legend wants that, Telemachos condemned Phalaris to die inside the bull.

La Leggenda
Un'antica leggenda racconta che la fioritura del mandorlo, sarebbe da ricondurre alla storia di Acamante e Fillide.
Fillide, giovane e bellissima principessa Tracia, figlia di Sitone, era innamorata di Acamante, figlio di Teseo e Fedra.
Durante la guerra di Troia, Acamante partì con Diomede, al seguito degli Achei.
Trascorsi dieci anni i superstiti tornarono dalla guerra.
La principessa, non vedendo tra loro Acamante, pensò fosse morto e disperata, si tolse la vita.
La dea Atena, commossa da questa tragedia trasformò Fillide in un albero: il Mandorlo.
Ma Acamante, non era morto…
Quando tornò seppe della morte di Fillide raggiunse il Mandorlo e lo abbracciò piangendo, all'improvviso, i rami del mandorlo si ricoprirono di fiori anzichè di foglie, come a ricambiare
l’abbraccio di Acamante.

- San Calogero
San Calogero rappresentato con la pelle nera, arrivò nella città di Agrigento intorno al XVsec.visse tutta la sua vita da eremita.
Il nome Calogero, significa bel vecchio, aggettivo con il quale venivano indicati gli eremiti.
Uomo di cultura giunse in città gia con la fama di taumaturgo e di colui che fermò il terremoto del 1578, dedicò la sua vita alla guarigione di molti malati.
La sapienza del Santo nero, è simboleggiata dal libro tra le mani della statua.
Durante il periodo di festeggiamenti in suo onore (le prime due domeniche di luglio), la tradizione vuole che chi ha ricevuto una grazia dal Santo, gli dedichi un viaggio “inpiduni”, “a piedi scalzi” o offra un pane raffigurante la grazia concessa, pani che vengono lanciati al Santo, dai balconi delle vie dove si svolge la processione.
Questo modo di offrire il pane ricorda che il Santo curava i lebbrosi e quando chiedeva la questua, la gente aveva paura di avvicinarsi così gettava da lontano le proprie offerte.
La festa in onore di San Calogero, è una delle più importanti della Sicilia Orientale.
La seconda domenica, oltre la processione del Santo lungo le vie cittadine si svolge una sfilata con i tipici carretti siciliani: carretti trainati da cavalli scelti e decorati con intarsi raffiguranti gesta dei paladini.

Falaride fu uno dei grandi tiranni dell'antica Akragas.
Dal 570 a.C.fino alla sua morte, si impegnò nel far diventare Akragas, una delle potenze economiche e militari più importanti dell'epoca, ma fu anche uno dei tiranni più crudeli della storia.
Secondo la leggenda infatti, il tiranno commissionò un gigantesco toro di bronzo vuoto al suo interno, all'interno del toro, arroventato da una grande fiamma accesa sotto la pancia, Falaride chiudeva i suoi nemici che morivano bruciati, compiacendosi delle loro urla che uscivano dalla bocca dell’animale di bronzo simili ad un muggito, successivamente le loro ossa venivano successivamente trasformate in braccialetti.
Affinché niente disturbasse questo il suo momento di gioia, ordinò che i fumi emessi, avessero il profumo d'incenso.
Falaride, ordinò anche a Perillo lo scultore del toro, di entrare all'interno del toro per provare gli effetti sonori, ma prima che Perillo morisse, Falaride lo fece uscire dal toro e lo gettò da una rupe.
La leggenda vuole, Telemaco condannò Falaride a morire nel toro.
