I have found this article, which may be of interest, if it hasn't already been presented on TDG.
It refers to some people believing that the junk DNA (95%) is not junk, but actuallly part of a computer language, similar to that of a hologram.
Make what you like of the claims, but I have to admit that in the past I have suggested we are living in a computer virtual reality, and that there is something outside of this universe with which we can communicate. Perhaps this article can support such an idea.

A curse, or a blessing?
I have read a bit about junk DNA, with some folks theorizing that it could be used to store information, a message from our extraterrestrial creators leaving a clue about who they were and what they wanted, when we would be wise enough to understand it. After all, what better and safer place to store a message, than inside each and every one of us?
But it seems that nowadays the theories being spread are those of fear and suspicion. Now the junk DNA are the chains which cloud our eyes so our Alien masters can easily keep us in bondage. After 'The Matrix' release in the 90s, it's easy to understand why these theories proliferated.
Personally, I don't know if any of this is true. Maybe junk DNA is akin to all the stuff we keep in our basements, that were very useful to us in the past, but we still keep 'just in case'. But there are many scientists who think junk DNA plays a fundamental role in the evolution of life; we have come to understand that it's not really about how different our genes are when comparing them with our cousins', the chimpanzees, but more importantly, how those genes are expressed. We humans have a gene that creates a protein for the brain just like in other apes, but in our DNA that gene works 'over time', creates more of that protein and enabled us to have larger brains. There relies the reason why we aren't throwing poo at each other... at least, not literally ;-)
To me it's fascinating how we are finding very few but important key differences between us and our closer relatives in the tree of life. I'm still open to the possibility that someone a long time ago 'tweaked' with just a few parts of our DNA so we could become what we are today. So were those tweakers' intentions good or bad? Maybe those terms are inapplicable to them.

I wish it wasn't called "Junk".
Its everything we are, and can be. The recipe, the cook, and the ingredients.
Would be cool
If one of those geneticists would remove that "junk" DNA and tried cloning a human with what's left. See how "junky" it really is. It wouldn't be there if it wasn't used, would it?
And, I also don't like the term Junk. If you send a computer or a toaster back in time to Da Vinci, my bet is he would also call it "junk"... :O)
Good idea
In fact, that's exactly what some Scientists are trying to do. Although obviously not with real full-grown humans.
The branch of Synthetic Biology is asking those questions: What are the minimum of genes required for a fully-functioning life form.
Maybe some of that non-coding DNA is vestigial, like our appendix. Or maybe it's full of amazing surprises. Genetics is really a brand-new discipline, barely in its infancy. We have much to learn.

it is probably not junk
I favour the ironic idea that the "junk" part of the DNA is what it is really for. The other parts, considered useful because they make people or animals or plants, are just machinery to make more or the "junk".
That idea has been around for a while, it is called "selfish genes".
Also I like the concept of the selfish agricultural crops. The common view is that Canadians cultivate wheat and corn, Chinese cultivate rice, Mexicans cultivate corn and agave. Supposedly for the survival of the Canadians, Chinese and Mexicans.
But this is backwards. The seemingly mindless plants are in fact cultivating the humansto insure the survival of plants.
The agave has a tight grip on Mexico, and is expanding into the US. Barley controls Germany.

There is plenty about this
There is plenty about this in The Cosmic Serpent by Jeremy Narby in relation to shamanism and ahuyasca.
